AVOCATIONAL
PORTFOLIO
HERE:

This later half is just for fun!
If you'd like to see what else I do beyond artist alley...

Enjoy!

AVOCATIONAL
PORTFOLIO

3D Models - BJD Skeleton Dolls
Attempted to make BJD (ball joint doll) 3D prints of skeletons but PLA becomes brittle over time making joints prone to cracking. Decided this flaw was not sale-worthy. Thus the idea was eventually scrapped as a potential selling item. Still- it is worth showing the progress.

Animations

Made in Clip Studio Paint & After Effects
Explored the world of 2D animation and a bit of storyboarding . This is just for fun! Enjoy some clips.

Game Development

Made in Blender & Unreal Engine
Working on a 3D style game with some friends as a part time hobby! As their only artist, I make all the models, textures, and animations. I learn bits about Unreal engine and computer programming on our weekly meetups. This is only worked on during our free time, so it may be a long while before you hear anything official about the game.

2D Test Game - Treblecuffs
My friends and I put together a basic idle-fight gamble game just to test if we'd work well as a team. 2D frame animation per character was straight forward, but time consuming. We decided for the next game we should pivot to 3D assets instead to lighten my work as the sole artist.

Cosplay

Primarily for fun. Sometimes for product sponsors
Cosplaying has mostly been a hobby. My expertise is in makeup and mask making. Sometimes I cosplay for video skits. Sometimes I travel to pretty locations to do photoshoots. Sometimes I cosplay for product sponsorships.
But- it's always been for fun foremost:

Webcomics

The OG intro of MylCreates to the Internet
I may be known for my cosplays first, art second, but I initially created MylCreates as a brand for my webcomic series! It's been on hiatus for the past decade. Committing to full color ended up being its downfall along with cosplay taking up a majority of my attention.
-
Pages were hand-drawn, felt ink on computer paper, scanned, then digitally edited/ composed. Towards the end a single page would take 8-10 hours to hand draw, then ~6 to 8 more to digitally color. Balancing that time commitment with school and work and budding new ventures became too cumbersome. I eventually burned out. If I were to start the series up again I think I'll stick to single color tones instead.
-
Here's some pages made (some of which were never posted/completed):
-
(Hacheeachkee)
(March 30 2014 - September 13 2016)

Video

Secondary Webcomic - Death Prince
In addition, I had a second webcomic that also succumbed to hiatus called Death Prince. Being a dark romantasy type story it ended up being more popular than Hacheeachkee (to my dismay). I used a technique of photo-bashing and Sketchup to speed up the production of pages. The story plot is honestly kinda cheesey, but I'm glad it garnered some interest. A lot of the bones of my stories were started when I was an angsty teen in highschool (and I just stuck with and developed them instead of burning the pages from cringe), so go figure. :p

Contest Entries

Competing for those merch deals
Often, manus will hold contests with the prize being free or discounted production of merch. I try to compete in these as much as possible to lower production costs. Even if I don't win (which is often), I can still use the design or experience for future productions and try, try again.

Booth Display

Tropical Vibes & Cultural Cohesion
I wanted a theme that felt green and refreshing. Like a jungle right on the beach. I tried to think what colors were often neglected in the artist alley and thus what may catch customer's eyes. I also wanted to keep it open, breezy, and gender neutral so that anyone could feel invited to peruse and converse with me. Comfy under a canopy, but not claustrophobic.
-
I wanted to reference my Filipino heritage by using (faux) endemic foliage like Monstera and Palm Leaves which adorn the top of my booth and mark my product numbers. I illustrate banana leaves on my "Flour & Fauna" pins display in regards to Filipino "Boodle Fights" which use banana leaves to line the table and present food.

Artist Blurb

💀🐧Cosplay veteran turned artist alley newcomer. MylCreates markets everything from animal shaped food and fandom favorites to cultural celebration and 90s nostalgia via stickers, acrylics, prints and more! Featuring a Midwest local skeleton and her alien penguin friend with a love of travel and Asian cuisine.

LORE???

Who's the Skeleton?

💀This is my mascot/ avatar Myl (Mel). Having a human representation of your brand is kind of boring- I figured I should have one that reflects my history and what I like.
-
Skele-Myl was designed during the height of the pandemic, often used as a therapeutic reflection of what I was going through day to day. As well as the face for my art commissions board. Eventually the design stuck as a brand rep.
-
Heres some tid bits:

  • My lifelong struggle with eczema originally had me favor zombies, particularly. Look at their skin- so relatable. If I didn't mascot as a skeleton- I probably would have made it a zombie. Having to not deal with skin though is quite a perk.

  • My decade long history of cosplaying skeletons from the indie game Undertale was my claim to notoriety. It only seemed apt the mascot would end up a skeleton.

  • The hat and collar contents change based on moods. The hat text was inspired by a piece of merch I saw from EatYourKimchi's merch site back in the 2010s, where the text sat under the cap. It seemed revolutionary at the time. I still regret not buying that hat.

  • Loooove cats and wanted to incorporate it. I'm allergic to them though- sad. I also love birds. I have to adjust the outfit sometime to incorporate that... maybe a fan tail in the back? Or a beak to the hood?

  • Love hoods, techwear fashion, elevator shoes, and my favorite Thai hilltribe pants. So they're all incorporated. The shoulders are slightly peaked and sleeves billowed, inspired by the Baro't Saya, a formal Filipina dress. It's a very subtle nod to my Filipino half. Trying to figure out how to incorporate it better without compromising the silhouette...

Who's the Penguin?

🐧This is my other mascot, from my webcomic days. Her name is Ywi (yew-wee). She is a pangwi. Pangwi are essentially alien penguin like creatures who (most) travel across the universe to chronicle their experiences and knowledge gained from other lifeforms. Basically an eternal study abroad program.Heres some tid bits:

  • Ywi has 2 other sisters, Kadi & Shaupi. Kadi (the oldest sister) is from my webcomic series Hacheeachkee on Tapastic. (Which hopefully I'll break it out of hiatus... eventually). Shaupi is still a baby who lives on their homeplanet.

  • Pangwi all have some form of gem on their chest. It is essentially an encapsulated nuclear power core which gives them the power needed to pull great feats like warping to other planets. The gems on their face or like an antenna on their head, act as their sensors to the world. They often keep their eyes closed. Baby pangwi don't develop their chest gem till later in life.

  • Just because they have power doesn't mean they are a mary-sue. Each pangwi specializes in something, like a study Major. Ywi specializes in travel and languages. Kadi specializes in shapeshifting and voice modulations. Shaupi is still a baby blank slate. When they concentrate extra hard to pull feats, their eyes reveal their eye patterns.

  • Some pangwi do diplomacy to allow easier access or recognition of pangwi in a planet that are not yet aware of them. Otherwise they stick to the shadows and watch from afar, or shapeshift to try best fit the local species. This is more common for planets that have not yet made contact with other alien forms.

  • Pangwi's reported chronicles earns them a currency called Zo'ko. It's a putty substance that looks like mercury. It can be molded and transformed into whatever local currency the planet they're visiting uses.

  • A lot of pangwi take on "followers". Those who either are the last of their species, lost their home planet, or just also have wanderlust for universal travel. The pangwi either help them find a home they'd ultimately want to settle in or let them retire on their guest rehabilitation planet. This is essentially the backdrop for Hacheeachkee. Ywi kind of does the reverse where she will pick a "follower" and then proceed to follow them around/ have them run the adventure.

  • The design of Ywi goes as far back as middleschool. I'm not sure why I decided I needed a mascot. But, I made a series of designs and asked my classmates which they liked best. Ywi won, but I think I rigged the poll from the start to make sure that design won. She appeared as a 3rd wheel in a series of comics my childhood friend and I would collaborate on with our OCs. It lasted all through middleschool until eventually we drifted to different highschools and I started developing stories on my own.

Secret Long Lore

The branding for MylCreates was created in a library, after another stressful Calculus 4 class. I was partway through college with a little dream of starting up my own webcomic. I figured I needed a name. I didn't want something that might lock me into a specific line of work. What if I found a calling in music or culinary arts later in life? Maybe I could go with "Mel"Creates as my alias... but that was taken. What if I just spelled "Mel" unique enough that I could carve a little space just for me in the search bar. "Myl" ended up working perfectly... Except when people would address me as "Mile" in person. An understandable trade off.
-
My partner in life had encouraged me since highschool, to try putting my webcomics out there, so I did. Tapastic was my debut site. I became very active with the community there and even visited some internet friends while I was abroad. That all changed after Undertale released and I got an urge to cosplay.
-
Cosplay wasn't entirely new. I was a part of ran the anime club in highschool. But I didn't start having the budget for it until college. I was at Joann Fabrics talking to the worker at the fabrics desk, trying to figure out how I would make the cartoony boots Papyrus wears. She said why don't I make a post on Instagram under #cosplayhelp or something like that. I never had an IG till that point... I started one up when I got home.
-
Little did I know I happened to be in the right place at the right time. The hype around the game brought many eyes to my cosplay and I felt I had to improve and cosplay more! I got swept into the cosplay community just as Tapastic was starting to fall off with their creators (the original runners sold it off and so it turned from indie western creators to a manhwa conglomerate site)
-
I experienced so much through cosplay, good and bad. I made amazing friends, crafted cringey yet comforting videos, dealt with the scum of the earth, and found hearts of gold. I traveled the world with a skeleton mask. I hunkered down through a pandemic and tried to keep creating despite my life long eczema creeping... getting worse. Pushing through time and again- the exhaustion- loss of wonder. And then I found my old drawings again...
-
...I think I'd like to draw again.
